Section 03 (Networks) — Preamble

(this is not required reading / testable material)

The videos in this section were recorded several years ago and discuss 3G technology and LTE. This may seem very outdated, as you may have heard about 5G technologies in the news.

First, the core points of this module are unchanged whether we are talking about 3G or 5G (or LTE, which is now often marketed as 4G LTE). Both are transmitted via electromagnetic radiation (think "radio waves"). 5G uses different frequencies and protocols to achiever much faster rates, but for our discussions they are essentially the same.

Interestingly, 5G has been in the news lately for unusual reasons. There is a conspiracy theory that 5G technology and covid-19 are related -- news story. Spoiler alert: They are not related in that way. However, the major Canadian rollout for 5G was expected in early 2020, but because of covid-19, it has been slowed and stalled.

Finally, in one of the videos, we talk about "cookies", and mention that it will be discussed "later". Unfortunately, this is one of the topics that has been removed for the new course format. We just didn't want to disappoint anyone looking forward to learning about "cookies". At the end of the course, we may provide additional readings or materials for those who want to learn more, but it will not be testable material.
