The ALIGN attribute in a TD (table cell definition) tag specifies how the contents of the table cell are to be aligned within the cell boundaries. In this case, LEFT alignment is being specified - if the cell is wider than its contents, perhaps because other cells in the same column have more in them, then the contents of this cell will be placed leftmost in the cell.

Other legal alignment values are CENTER and RIGHT.

Netscape also implements a VALIGN (Vertical ALIGN) attribute, for which legal values are TOP, BOTTOM, CENTER and BASELINE.

(The ALIGN and VALIGN attributes may also be supplied in a TR tag, determining the default horizontal and vertical alignment of the cells in a row. The TABLE tag may also have an ALIGN attribute, but it has a different meaning - it specifies that the table is as a whole is to be left or right justified, and text flowed around it.)
