I was able to follow the instructions and complete the install
without having to install any new software.
NOTE: I had previously installed a far bit of other software using Mac Ports
which is most likely why I didn't need to install anything now.
Mac Ports
The compilation of gdb did fail on my first attempt but following the instructions that say to disable werror by running configure again and then make worked fine.
