Technical Status Report - 96Q2 Ian Davis University of Waterloo Progress Report In the period July 1st - Sep 30 1995 we developed a DDL validator and distributed both this and a pre-release of our HQP software to other members of CSSC. We attended the first Web Site Working Group meeting in Montreal on July 7th, and presented a paper to the SQL/MM Rapporteur Group meeting in Ottawa on July 26th. We developed software which facilitates seamless integration of our HQP with the World Wide Web. We provided a demonstration of our HQP to graduate students on September 6th and a demonstration of our web interface to I.T.R.C. in Toronto on September 21st. We began the process of developing change proposals for the SQL/MM standards body which describe how Structured Text can be supported as an abstract data type within the evolving SQL3 standard. Achievements The major progress in our (100) activities has been our on going interaction with international standards bodies, presentations made to the SQL/MM standards (170A), and our preliminary work to develop DML change proposal specifications for standards bodies (170B). The major progress in our (300) activities has been in the improvement, testing and evaluation of our HQP software (330 & 340), and in the development of a stateless CGI interface to the HQP (353). The major progress in our (500) activities is in the development of a script language which simplifies the task of building web pages which interact with our HQP, and in developing an interpreter which when invoked from a standard HTML web page operates on these scripts (523), and interfaces with our HQP by using the CGI interface (353). The major progress in our (700 & 800) activities has been in developing interesting web pages which utilize our web site gateway (523), and CGI interface (353), and in demonstrating the resulting product to I.T.R.C. This demonstration used reasonable volumes of real world text, and showed how large volumes of text could be searched and selectively retrieved by any authorized user on the information highway. Problem review We encountered no significant problems impacting on our progress during the last quarter. We are currently very short of disk space and this is impacting on our ability to store and manipulate large volumes of data. We have ordered additional disk storage which should be available within the month. We do not have access to a portable platform on which we can demonstrate all aspects of both our client and server software effectively. While we are able to successfully demonstrate our web client interfaces using an IBM PC this is not the ideal demonstration environment for us. The current data sources available for demonstration purposes are somewhat limited. We continue to search for alternative data sources which might effectively demonstrate our HQP capabilities, and in particular its ability to integrate text with other forms of relational information. Coming events plan Weekly meetings of the research group within the University will continue throughout the next period. We will be meeting with the Minister of Industry, the honorable John Manley, on October 10th, and will be presenting a demonstration of our software to him. Other members of CSSC have been invited to attend that meeting. The next meeting of the HQP WG is scheduled for October 11th, 1995, and will be held at Open Text. We will be demonstrating our software November 7-9th at CASCON'95 in Toronto.
