Technical Status Report - 96Q4 Ian Davis University of Waterloo Progress Report In the period January 1st - March 31 1996 we completed our efforts to see our research incorporated into the evolving SQL/MM standard, distributed a first release of our HQP to other members of CSSC, began exploring possible beta trial applications which might effectively showcase our HQP, and continued testing, evaluating and improving of our HQP software. Achievements Our SQL/MM change proposals describing how structured text might be accessed through an Abstract Data Typing mechanism were accepted for inclusion within the current draft of the SQL/MM international standard (170). This material was subsequently included in SQL/MM MCI-004 (Cover date: March 1996). We incorporated some basic DDL (Data Definition Language) commands into our HQP (331), and provided the first official release of our software to all members of CSSC, as earlier scheduled (395). We extended the language accepted by our HQP to include support for left/right/union and full joins, as well as support for the unique, match, and overlaps predicates (331). We created a new text agent which communicated with an in-house text engine, demonstrating the general applicability of our structured text proposals across text engine platforms (341). We developed additional WWW applications which allowed users to interactively examine the information schema, determine accessible tables etc. and thus gain a better appreciating for the scope and scale of our current demonstration (515). We devoted effort to both developing internal test suites and testing our HQP against expected behaviour (700). These internal test suites were distributed as part of our first release. We have begun the process of gathering textual and relational data from within the University of Waterloo which we hope to use within a public WWW beta trial (810). Problem review We encountered no significant problems impacting on our progress during the last quarter. Coming events plan Weekly meetings of the research group within the University will continue throughout the next period. The University of Waterloo will be hosting a working meeting of the SQL/MM Canadian Advisory Committee on April 23rd and 24th. The next meeting of the HQP/WWW WG is scheduled for April 30th, 1996, and will be held at InContext in Toronto. We plan to attend.
