Group assignment - completed in groups of 4
Locate a high school that is currently offering courses in computer science
according to some provincial curriculum. Clearly indicate the curriculum
that is to be followed. Critique the CS education being offered at the high
school: are the courses adequate to cover the curriculum? are the courses
adequate to prepare students for entry to UW's CS program? is the equipment
being used appropriate? are the assignments and exams appropriate to teach the
material and to prepare students for entry to CS at UW? For any shortcomings
that you encounter, propose some constructive solutions. Make sure you also
clearly identify what you feel is needed to prepare students for entry to CS at
UW and why.
Conclude with some general recommendations for the high school to follow in the
future, to provide a good quality education for their students. You are free to
include in appendices any material you are able to gather that indicates what is
being taught at the high school. Organize your appendices appropriately, if you
choose to include them.
The write-up for this assignment should be confined to a maximum of 2500 words.
You may well have to limit your focus within the assignment. Simply make clear
in an introduction what you are choosing to focus on in your report. Clearly
organize your report, using appropriate subheadings.
The assignment is due on Tuesday March 4 at 10am and is worth 10 marks. All
group members will receive the same mark, unless someone is reported to have
failed to contribute adequately. Cases of inadequate participation will be
handled individually and may result in that person receiving a lower overall
grade.
