Team AA group of computer scientists and political scientists who want to make use of the convenience, reliability, and security of modern communication systems to enhance citizen engagement with the Canadian political system. The group would like to see all Canadians of voting age regularly and directly provide input into key parliamentary decisions. One proposal is for new legislation to follow current procedures, with one key addition. In this proposal, new legislation would be introduced and debated in the House, debates and submissions would be published online (so far this is the current procedure). Then, all eligible voters could review this material and vote electronically, through secure on-line portals, on the proposed legislation.
Team BA group of citizens and political scientists who are opposed to the changes to the current parliamentary system. They argue that the proposed digital voting systems are not secure enough to be trusted with something as critical as the passage of Canadian laws. If the proposed systems were compromised, it would seriously erode the trust Canadians have in their governance.
