CS 492 W26 Role-Playing Exercise 6

Right to disconnect for Software Engineers

Team A

A coalition of professional software engineers, and labor advocates who argue that tech workers should have a legally protected right to disconnect from work outside of work hours. They argue that constant connectivity through email, Slack, and other on-call systems has eroded boundaries between work and personal life, contributing to stress and burnout. They believe that without formal protections, engineers face implicit pressure to remain available 24/7. They argue that a right to disconnect would promote healthier work practices, and in the long run increase productivity.

Team B

A group of founders/CEOs and big Tech executives who oppose formal right-to-disconnect rules for the tech sector. They argue that software development often involves asynchronous collaboration across time zones and occasional bursts of after-hours work that are difficult to regulate. They maintain that software engineers are highly paid and they know full well that many positions require some periods of intense work. They stress that formal protections could reduce competitiveness in a fast-moving industry.
