CS 492 W26 Role-Playing Exercise 7

Internet identity, personhood and biometric verification

Team A

A government task force on Social Media platforms argues that all major social network and public communication platforms must adopt robust "personhood" credentials for users. They argue that ensuring users are human will prevent automated manipulation of public discourse, reduce bot-driven misinformation, and restore trust in digital spaces. They propose standardized biometric verification protocols that platforms must enforce.

Team B

A coalition of digital rights and civil liberty advocates who argue that mandating personhood credentials for social media and other on-line platforms harms privacy and undermines inclusivity. They reason that strong identity requirements exposes users to surveillance risks, erodes anonymity, and thereby stifles dissent and whistleblowing, and could lead to catastrophic data leaks of biometric information.
