Grading
The grading scheme for Fall 2012 is as follows:
- Assignments: 20%
- Midterm: 30%
- Final Exam: 50%
Notes:
- You must pass the weighted exam component to pass the course.
For example, if you get 60% on the midterm (18/30) and 40% on the
final (20/50), then you will not pass the course since your weighted
exam average is 38/80 (less than 50%). This is independent of your
assignment grade. If instead you received 40% on the midterm (12/30)
and 60% on the final (30/50), then your weighted exam average is
42/80, a passing exam grade. In this case, you must get at least 8/20
on the assignments to pass the course (since your final grade would
then be at least 50/100).
- There will be 9 weekly assignments counting for 20% of the final grade,
as shown on the Assignments page. The assignments are weighted equally.
We will drop your lowest assignment grade of the term (excluding
discipline cases).
- Assignments are created by the instructor and are marked by the
graduate teaching assistants based on specifications drawn up by the
instructor. The midterm and final are created by the instructor and
marked by instructors, tutors, and graduate teaching assistants.
- Your graded assignments will be returned through the MarkUs
system. Graded midterm exams will be returned in the lab.
Be prepared to show ID to retrieve your exams. Final exams are
not returned to students.
Grade Appeals
Assignments: send an email to cs115ae@student.cs.uwaterloo.ca clearly
stating what you feel was mis-marked. If you are not satisfied with
the resolution, contact the instructor.
If you have problems with the marking of the midterm exam, you need to
resubmit it to the instructor together with a written
explanation within a short period (to be announced) after the exam is
made available. In all cases, you should check the posted model
solutions to understand your errors.
