CS 115: Introduction to Computer Science 1, UAE edition

Helpful tips

Using the lab machines

  • Logging in For your name, use the first 8 characters of your Quest userid. If your Quest userid is shorter than 8 characters long, use the entire userid. During the first lab of the term, tutors will let you know your temporary password, which you will change to a password of your choice.
  • Connecting to a CS server On the bottom of your screen is the ''dock'', which shows icons for various programs. Click on the X icon to start the X11 server. The X11 server is ready to use when ''X11'' appears at the top left corner of your screen (to the right of the apple). The other words across the top of your screen are the names of the menus. Click on the Applications menu, and select from the drop-down menu the 'xterm on cpuXX' option (any one of the cpuXX servers will work - just don't choose the 'xterm on this Mac' option). This will connect you to one of the CS servers. You may see a warning message, but you can ignore it. If you're asked about an RSA key fingerprint, type in yes to continue. Wait until you see a prompt before going to the next step.
  • Changing your password See instructions in Lab 1.
  • Logging out from X11 Type logout in the X11 window.
  • Logging out from your Mac account Before you leave the lab, log out of your Mac account by clicking on the apple in the top left, then selecting ''Log Out...'', and clicking ''Log Out'' on the dialog box which appears.
