CS 492/CS 692 S20 Handouts

This page will provide a link to a Handout, each time that one would have been distributed in class, if we were meeting face to face. The link will go live shortly before the class in question, per the timeable.

The handouts to be posted here will include: A2 sheet, Ethics Workshop handout and A5B sheet.

  • Let's Solve a Problem: Set up of Let's Solve a Problem May 29 class
  • The May 29 class is intended to be an enjoyable brainstorming exercise and does not require any extra research. We will explain this in further detail May 22. We will be polling both synchronous and asynchronous students that day in order to organize for May 29.

Assignment 2 sheet (pdf) Assignment 2 sheet (txt)

Note that A2 is intended to only take 50 minutes to complete and is not asking for research to be done. The pdf gives you an idea of the expected space for each answer. Fill in a tex or doc file if you like but upload the PDF of that on LEARN.

While we are expecting just one page to be submitted, if you want to remove the Instructons to fit one page that is acceptable. Do not, however, remove the Questions. (If you spill over very briefly to a second page that is also fine). We expect all students to do well on this assignment. We are giving you an opportunity to think and we are judging your ability to think. There is no right or wrong answer. (While the pdf sheet tells you to write, do type your responses).

    Assignment 5b (pdf) sheet

    Assignment 5b (doc) sheet

Instructions for A5b: type your responses in the spaces provided but try not to type in more than would have fit if you were writing by hand. Upload your completed A5B sheet (which should be one page or not much more than one page) as PDF in your A5B dropbox in LEARN. We have provided doc if you want to work with this and also pdf which shows you the intended amount of space for each response.

A5b is to be submitted no later than class time on July 29. We urge you to simply complete it during class July 27. You will not able to do so until you receive an A5 from your TA. This will happen by email about 10 minutes into class time July 27. A5b is primarily a learning experience: to see how others write essays, to then reflect on how you can write well (or avoid writing poorly).

    Assignment 5 Formatting (pdf) sheet

Assignment 5 LaTeX Template (optional; zip)

For your A5 essay on the impact of computerization for a segment of society, please include a cover page that clearly shows your name. The TAs also ask you to adhere to some special formatting guidelines. See the document above for a list of instructions. This document also acts as a LaTeX template that you are free to use. If you have any questions, please email Andreas Stöckel (astoecke@uwaterloo.ca).

NOTE: Valerie (Sec1) or Andreas (Sec2) should be cc'ed on any correspondence regarding A5. If you are one of the small handful of students who seemed unclear about plagiarism on A3 (note from me) you can contact Andreas for more information.
