Course Requirements
This course has many components to worry about when you're getting set
up. If you find anything in the Distance Education Calendar or on this web
site confusing, feel free to call or email a member of the CS 100 team.
For contact information, visit the Course Personnel page.
Hardware
- IBM PC or compatible, with 32 MB of RAM and 200 MB of hard disk space for course software.
Software
- We use Windows XP in our notes, but if you have Windows 98 or 2000 you should be fine. There are a few differences between the latest versions of Windows and some of the older versions, however previous students have not found these differences significant.
- The three main components of Microsoft Office
are required: Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheet), and Access
(database). While you can use MS Word 97 and MS Excel 97, MS Access 97
cannot read files created using MS Access 2000 so you must have MS Access
2000. Our lab notes cover both 2003 and 2007 versions of MS Office. Be sure you know which one is applicable for your system as the instructions vary slightly.
Internet
- Access to the Internet, including an email account and a web browser, is required; you need to contact a local internet provider before you start the course - if you're having trouble with this access, just call the instructor.
Books
- CS 100 Textbook, which you need to purchase from the
bookstore. It is required and all assigned readings are testable come exam time so be sure to pick it up.
- Lab files will be posted on UW ACE. It is up to you whether you print them off or not. Some people prefer to not print in which case you can read them off your screen (this requires more changing between windows), otherwise feel free to print and make notes as you go.
