UofW's Historical Status reports to CSSC
Between 1994 and 1997 the University of Waterloo as a member of the Canadian
Strategic Software Consortium (CSSC) cooperated with a number of canadian
software companies in conducting precompetative research.
The following status reports (produced by UofW) provided CSSC with timely
reports of progress made by the UofW towards achieving the goals of CSSC.
I would recommend that it be a requirement of any large project to produce
similar status reports every three months for all of the following reasons.
- These status reports
forced us to constantly evaluate and review our progress, thus keeping
our focus on our timelines and deliverables.
- Knowing that one
had to produce status reports every three months was a strong incentive
to make progress that could be both demonstrated and documented.
- Because these status reports were read widely by the most senior levels of
management and by most of the other participants in this venture, any
problems or concerns raised within them were resolved promptly, typically
by those most well placed to resolve them.
- The status reports
that other companies provided helped to rapidly bring us up to speed
with their progress, as they made progress.
- These status
reports provide an audit trail very effectively documenting past
activities, problems, and resolutions of these problems.

Note
Since these status reports document historical events they should be
treated with respect. They should not be duplicated, or distributed
beyond the intended audience. The intended audience is restricted
to students currently enrolled in CS446.
